Exploring Biogeochemistry and Earth Science through Teaching, Research, and Service

I’m a geoscientist and educator working at the intersection of water, soil, and human health. My research focuses on how environmental conditions—especially changing water and climate patterns—shape the chemistry of soils, ground and surface water, and the food we grow. I also work closely with students and communities to improve understanding of groundwater quality and environmental risks. This work matters deeply to me because it connects scientific discovery to real-world challenges and gives students the tools to make a difference.

EPHSI

Through EPHSI, we work with local communities to offer free private well water testing while giving students the chance to learn real-world water science. It’s a collaboration that builds both public trust and student experience in environmental science, public health, and environmental justice.

TEACHING

I design my courses to spark curiosity and connect science to everyday life. Whether in the classroom, lab, or field, I encourage students to think often and critically, ask questions, and build confidence through hands-on experiences.

Water and Soil Sustainability for Nutritious Food Production

Our lab studies how water and soil conditions shape the nutrition and safety of rice, focusing on contaminants like arsenic and cadmium under current and future climate scenarios.

Field Trips

Fieldwork is one of the best ways to learn about the Earth. From exploring local streams to visiting regional geologic landmarks, our trips give students a chance to see, touch, and understand the processes shaping the environment around them.
